How to catch Brown Crab
- Buy the Crab Fishing Rod from the Lighthouse shop for $3. Without a rod you cannot catch anything, including the no-bait shore pool.
- Cast into the shallow water around the starting beach. Brown Crab, Shrimp, Gar and Mackerel are the four creatures that bite without bait equipped.
- Reel, drop the crab on land, then hit it. Brown Crab has 15 health, the second-lowest of any creature in the game, so one melee hit is normally enough.
What Brown Crab is for
Early money. The lighthouse keeper tells you straight out that if you cannot afford what he is asking for, you can always catch crabs and sell them to him. Three dollars per crab is slow, but it is the money the first island is balanced around.
Common mistakes
- Eating it. Any creature can be eaten to restore fullness, but a Brown Crab sells for $3 and the hunger bar is not the bottleneck on Lighthouse Island.
- Waiting for bait. There is no crab-specific bait on the Lighthouse shop that improves the Brown Crab; Hot Dog bait is for Rock Crab and Lobster.
